With the ever-increasing number of self-proclaimed "experts" on ISO management system standards and other competence areas, and the vast number of training courses offered around the world, with varying syllabi and standards of presentation, the need has become apparent for a single, internationally recognized test that can be used to demonstrate an individual's understanding of international standards and other competence areas. The publication of a new series of standards in ISO 9000 in December 2000 has triggered a radical change in "mind-set" for many quality practitioners.

Initially founded in January 2001, ISTO aimed to provide independent, worldwide tests of understanding of the ISO 9000:2000 series and other international standards. To-date, ISTO is offering a rather comprehensive range of tests to international standards and other competence areas to address the qualification needs of professionals from different disciplines.
